Use the production-size basket

Choose the brewer's normal full volume and dose 60 g coffee per litre of delivered water. Use the same basket, paper, spray head and machine program. Start from the grinder position used for the last acceptable batch, with one coarser and one finer step ready for comparison.

Measure actual water delivery once rather than relying only on the reservoir mark. Level the bed without compacting it and confirm that every spray outlet is open. Uneven equipment wetting can make a good grind appear inconsistent across the carafe.

Run three complete batches

Brew the reference, coarse and fine settings as separate full batches after the machine returns to the same thermal state. Note first water contact, the end of delivery and the last steady drip. Do not reduce volume to save coffee; a shallow basket answers a different calibration question.

Before tasting, gently mix each carafe in the same way. Pour coded samples from the first, middle and final portion. These positions reveal stratification or changing service temperature that a single cup from the top would conceal.

Judge contact and uniformity

The coarse setting may shorten contact and leave all three samples light or pointed. A finer position can improve sweetness until the basket begins holding water, bypass appears at the edge or the finish becomes dry. Treat any approach to overflow as an immediate failed condition.

Compare the spread between carafe positions as well as their average flavor. A setting is operationally stronger when early and late cups agree, even if another sample produces one exceptional pour. Batch coffee must work across service, not only at the cupping spoon.

Correct a batch-scale miss

Move finer when contact is short and all coded cups lack sweetness. Move coarser when drainage continues long after delivery or bitterness and dryness increase. If positions disagree but total time is normal, verify carafe mixing and spray coverage before touching the burr gap.

Stop after the selected setting repeats contact within thirty seconds and the first, middle and final servings share the same balance direction. A further click is unnecessary once it reduces service consistency or basket headroom.

Build the full-batch log

Record grinder model, click, burr temperature if relevant, coffee dose, measured water delivery, basket and filter, start, delivery end, drawdown end, bed wetting, carafe mixing and three-position tasting notes. Include any bypass or near-overflow observation.

Keep this result tied to brewer program and batch volume. Re-run the ladder after changing spray head, filter shape, water delivery or production size; the hand grinder setting cannot compensate reliably for a different machine profile.

Can I calibrate a batch brewer with a half-size test?

Not reliably. A smaller dose changes bed depth and contact time. Use the normal production volume when the goal is a full-batch setting.

Why taste three places in the carafe?

The beginning, middle and end reveal mixing and service differences. A setting is useful only when the batch remains reasonably uniform.
